Raising Awareness - What We Learnt

  • The programme for LGBT history month which started as a one day information fair, was key to the perceived success of the project internally
  • It took up more time than was anticipated but the overall impact was worth it, it really did start the conversation
  • More support and information is needed for front of house, reception and security

 

Comments and Feedback from Staff:

There have been a mixture of responses from students, some students questioned the high profile of LGBT history month as opposed to the amount of support of other events such as Black History Month. Student commented a lot on the window displays but didn’t know what it was for, we could have had a bit more of a briefing to be able to answer students questions. The open barber’s event had a lot of positive feedback; one student commented that she felt it was very brave for the college to take on this project.”

 

“It’s about visibility; it’s been great I was approached by a student who said 'This has made me feel comfortable about being who I am and safe' "

 

“A lot of tutors in both Drama and Music have been very open to the project and have joined task groups and offered to perform in the launch of LGBT history month, it’s clear that what has happened so far has raised awareness of LGBT and brought it to the front of the discussion at the college”

 

“I really noticed the rainbow and all the publicity for LGBT month, there has been so much going on, the flowers and the rainbow flag on the window. It’s probably too early to say if there have been attitudinal changes, we will have to wait and see, raising awareness is good start, there is probably a long way to go”
